When I retired 15 years ago (can it really be that long ago?) fuel oil was $1 a gallon, and I kept the thermostat at 70. I used 3 gallons a day, and paid $1000 a year to heat the whole house and make the hot water.
Then fuel went to $3+ a gallon, and I put the thermostat at 55 and paid $400 for a used stove and $1500 for a second chimney at one end of the house. Since I have 7 acres of woods (mainly maple and locust) I have free fuel. I use a gallon a day for hot water, so I still pay pay $1000 a year for fuel oil.
I like the "free" heat and so do the dog and the cat. In 20 years of wood cutting and splitting, I have only almost cut off one finger, so far.
