yest MIg is the way to go. Miller or Lincoln 255 amp plus . .035 wire or dual shield will weld just about any steel you want. For another $1200-1400 you can get a matched aluminum spool gun and weld aluminum to your hearts delight. Don't go 110 volt and don't buy junk, it will be a total waste of money. That said you are looking at an investment that approaches $4K . But will serve you well for many years and open Fab opportunities you don't even know exist.
If you are welding only steel 1/4" or less a small 110 volt dual shield (flux core) unit will work so long as you don't use an extension cord.
