Gil has a good point. The sad news where I live the welding shop hourly rate around here is less than $50 an hour. That includes the labor, electricity and equipment. If I was to do the math and figure out how much my welding costs me per hour it would be scary... The good news is I do it for fun and not to make money... When I built a log splitter a few years back I took it to the local welding shop to have the one inch thick wedge welded to the I beam. They did it in ten minutes, costing me $20... The advantage of the local shop is the welders weld 40 hours a week, so on a bad day their worst welds will look better than our best!!! That isn't to say though that you can't learn to do some decent TIG and MIG welding.
