Gil, I have been in the welding business over 30 years and it is still a tough question to answer.
Mig (metal inert gas) is what most people start out with for light gauge steel. If you use s-6 wire and co2 gas you will have success for most steel.
tig (tungsten inert gas) is the best for aluminum. you will spend a bunch of money getting a good tig machine. Might justify taking your aluminum projects to a fab shop.
