Bottom of radiator is supposed to be cooler, water cools as it moves down through the tubes, circulates from the bottom through the engine and returns to top. T/stat holds it in the engine until it gets hot. If water in hose above t/stat gets frozen, it prevents flow when the t/stat opens and engine boils creating a lot of pressure until the ice melts. If t/stat faulty it can prevent most of the flow and as water heats up can create back pressure making a lot of noise.
