So I think I like this theory. The antifreeze is new, but I can't say I was very careful about the ratio. I would expect that it should be -34 (I am for 50/50), but maybe I mismeasured.
This time I caught it boiling out of the radiator cap like a tea kettle (which I left at 1 click) . Does the water return to the top of the radiator? Perhaps the bottom is frozen and not allowing flow. Presumably if it is a freeze it couldn't be the engine since that was 200 deg.
I diluted the mix with straight antifreeze into the radiator, but I think that it might have just boiled out when I made an emergency b-line back to home base (closer to the wrenches).
