As I 40+ year driving career driver, here is the scoop on the passing of the coe trucks. Somewhere around 1990, the federal laws changed on measuring length. Before, they measured the total length or the rig … after, they measured the length of the trailer only and the total length could be whatever … So the reason for the COE was no longer there. The Coe was less comfortable, harder to work on, less safe (the driver was always the first person to the accident) and any every way less desirable than the standard tractor once the length advantage was taken away. Freightliner tried to make a new COE to compete and they couldn't sell any of them.
