Seems like the overseas rubber cracks out faster than the older stuff. Glad you were able to avoid serious injury there.
One I learned a lesson on was U bolts on leaf springs. Was torching off rusted U bolts of a mid 70's Chevy one ton. Heated with a torch till it was red hot and hit the oxygen. BOOM! it was like a cannon went off. Seems the center bolt that holds the leaves together had rusted off allowing the whole spring pack to explode. I found the top part of the U bolt 30 feet away and it hit near the 14 ft high ceiling leaving a big dent. I learned from then on to ALWAYS put a C clamp on spring packs when torching bolts off. Once was enough for me too!
By the way, I recognize that cart. I had to rebuild mine a few years back and used parts off a riding lawn mower my buddy was scrapping out.
