The copper takes a lot of the heat away from the sheet metal and controls placement of the welded in metal. It really helps you from blowing though the sheet metal. I learned that when I was welding up rust pin holes in my carryall's window metal wraps. It was a real pain even with the copper backing as the metal was badly thinned. It took some work but they came out great.
