The only difference I have found is that
The "before type" uses a straight spline
Armature and drive, meaning the motor turns the drive to engage it.
The "after type" has a spiral spline armature and drive, so that as the pedal is pushed
The drive starts rotating for engagement before the motor starts spinning resulting in less grinding.
All starters since use the spiral drive.
