cab floor fit questions

I am getting my cab ready for paint and to figure out which fasteners I need. One thing I noticed is the opening in the floor has a step that looks like it could take a wooden floorboard (like my 40 Plymouth truck had). The right and left Power Wagon floorboards don't seal up the back of the opening toward the seat pedestal. Even though these are work trucks it doesn't seem right not to seal up better. How was this dealt with originally?
