thicker would be better for sure but the coarse spline is weak because of the shape of the teeth. fine splines are triangular teeth and the coarse are square. The way the energy gets transferred into the axle is totally different between the 2 designs. the triangular teeth spread the load out around the edge of the axle which is the best way to spread the load. The square teeth send the force down into the center increasing likelihood of breakage. hope that makes sense.
