If you are using the foot pedal starter, remember that the pedal pushes the starter drive out to engage the flywheel teeth at the same time you are mashing several copper contacts together inside the switch to turn on the starter motor.
I agree that you should look for a bad electrical connection anywhere in any of the battery terminals or cables, but don't overlook the starter switch. If you have a nice bright test light going into the switch, but a dim one coming out, there is the culprit. Do both tests while cranking the engine.
