Diesels in general don't like high RPM, it's the nature of the way they work. Long strokes and heavier parts that diesels need to use don't play well with high RPMs. If you shorten the stroke for higher speeds you tend to loose the torque that makes them desirable for moving heavy loads. A 4BT can be adjusted to run faster, but at the cost of longevity and vibration.

There are some newer options like the 3.0 diesel from the new RAM, but cost is the major issue with all these swaps. Gas engines are plentiful and parts are cheap, diesel is not so lucky. By the time you find/buy/adapt a higher spinning diesel you probably could have dropped a new or re-built V8 in front of it and got the same or more power.

It's a tricky balancing act between all these different variables. The most important part is to make sure you upgrade everything as a system if you want it to be reliable and safe. But there are a LOT of ways to get there as every vehicle on the road proves.
