Ultimately my decision about what to replace was based on the fear of throwing good money after bad into an engine which wasn't salvageable without a complete rebuild. I spent a lot of time on the forum and archives seeing what worked for others, and opted for the cheap and easy, figuring that if it didn't work out not much lost in terms of dollars. Time would be a learning experience.

The engine was previously bored out, and I was able to get pistons for $5/each - so why not? Rings for about the same and E-bay piston rod bearings for $20 or so. Main bearings were a lot more expensive so I decided to shim. I did clean up the journals with emery cloth, one or two were a little rough. No valve grind. I got lots of advice/recommendations and help from the forum - I have no expertise in this.

Having no prior experience in this realm, it's really hard to know how much you can "get away with", so a large was was/is an experiment. Time will tell if this was a good approach. In the short term I think I got lucky, but who knows how long that will last?

But it's been fun, just wish there was more time for it.

Don
