Good luck with your frame numbers. The ones on my 6x6 were also buried under angle iron and welding. They were mostly unscathed, other than the scarring from a cutting torch at some point. My truck also has a second set of serial numbers, which are the same size and style as as the factory numbers, but are a different sequence. I have no idea why they are there.
