If the shaft is rusty and pitted, like most are, you can clean it up with some emery cloth. Cut it into 2" strips and use it on the shaft like you are shining your shoes. Work your way down to very fine, get the shaft really smooth, and the clutch will slide easily. You don't want any difficulty shifting or you will be taking it off and doing it all over. I've been through it.
