1/2 ton knuckle felt installation?

Hi. Seems like it should be the simplest thing in the world, but how should the felt fit in the retainer ring halves? My felt is rectangular in cross section but the retainer is more triangular. Should I bend and crimp the ring or trim the felt with a bevel?

Should the felt be horizontal add in the picture or vertical? Is it knuckle pressure that holds it in place?

The Manual says not much on this and the ones which came out don't help me understand.
