Lots of folks by me here in the rural areas of Western New York have outdoor wood boilers. Of the 2-3 that I have spoken to, they all love them but admit that you need a source of free or cheap wood (obviously not a problem if you are already searching for a wood stove). Bonus is that they can provide (or at least supplement) your hot water. Down side compared to a wood stove is $$$ - especially the high end ones which are quite expensive. I am looking for an alternative to propane and considered wood heavily but am leaning more toward geothermal - higher up front cost but reasonable payback (5-7 years, maybe less if I do it myself) and no cutting wood!
