Play in Bendix-Weiss univeral joints?

Hi all,

I have a few Bendix-Weiss 1/2t front axles and was comparing the play in them. I have one which when set straight is tight (it requires force to get it straight (shafts aligned and parallel), and it stays that way). When I pull on the ends in opposite directions there is no movement. It swivels okay, but at straight it gets tight.

Others flop around and "stretch" more then 1 inch when you pull the ends away (i.e. get the splined ends at 180degrees and pull).

Should these be tight/have resistance when setting them straight? Is play a problem, given that they are constrained by the diff and the spindle?
