Concerning the flat fender (WDX - WM300) civilian Power Wagon: Smaller split rims go with the narrower wheels for the 7.50 x 16 tires. Larger split rims go with the wider wheels for the 9.00 x 16 tires. This was for all years 1946 and up.
I know of no other differences between the split rims, or any point in time where they allegedly got wider or narrower. I have, though, seen Power Wagons equiped with what appears to be aftermarket split rims on stock wheels. These appeared to be two piece with a narrow rim at the wheel and a wider rim from there out.
