17 digit vins do
17 digit vin
first 3 country and mfgr
ie 1 = usa
2 = canada
3 = mexico (lots of dodge trucks today)
j = japan
etc , etc
4 thru 9 mfgr model info
10 year code
11 check digit (sae vin check digit)
12 plant code
13 thru 17 = sequential mfgr's serial number
thats it
there is a simple program to verify all 17 digit vin numbers if it does not pass it is no good
