I've done a lot o research into 6 spds lately. The Chevy S6-650 will bolt up to a standard Chevy block pattern (same pattern for 45 years!) but Ford has 3 different patterns. The biggest pattern (460/7.3/Powerstroke) is needed for the Ford S6-650. The Ford S5-42 came in both big and small bolt patterns because some were put behind the 300 six and some variant of the 351.
The NV5600 has a different block bolt pattern than older Dodge bellhousings (it takes its' own bellhousing) and so it's be difficult to bolt one up to a different motor. However, the 4BT Cummins can easily be adapted to the NV5600 using parts from 6BT applications.
A 6 spd of some sort best suits the relatively narrow rpm band of the 4BT and allows its' high torque to be utilized most effectively, in both my and I think Cabell's opinion.
It appears the 5600 is the way to go currently for the 4BT.
On my latest 6AT3.4 into '67 Landcruiser FJ45V 4 door wagon project, I will be using either a NV4500 with a Klune crawler box (2.7 low range ratio) or an Eaton FS6109A 9 spd which requires an SAE#2 flywheel housing. It has a 1st gear of 12.64. There are 6 gears between 4.77 and direct.
