How is spraying gasoline into the carb any more dangerous than spraying ether (starting fluid) into the carb, something we old engine owners do frequently without a second thought?
I would be a little leary of using a windex spray bottle or something like that, but I've often used poured a little dash or so in the carb, capped the gas can and put it far away, and then cranked the motor. It's a quick way to answer the "fuel or spark" question.
When I was about 10 my friend's dad was burning a brush pile and I guess it wasn't going good enough so he took a gallon gas can and proceeded to pour some on the fire. The fire went up the stream of gas (duh!) and he heaved burning can off into the bushes someplace.
Fortunately the woods were wet enough and it didn't explode, but for all the people who get away with something like that, there's a plenty that don't.
