Rule of thumb on the DiRT email list for the new Rams with the Cummins are.....
Automatic - 4.10
Manual - 3.54
Doing heavy pulling day in and day out like a serious work truck would be doing then get the manual with 4.10.
I suppose if you are pulling just a few times a year you could get it done with no trouble using the 3.54 and Automatic.
I know of a 96 12 valve automatic that is used for hauling new camping trailers to dealers that had about 350000 miles on it and was still going.
I also have another friend who pulls a proving trailer for LP Gas and Anhydrous. He had the luxery of getting a new truck every year or 2 and had 4 different new Rams. 2 were 12 valve, 1 was a 24 valve and 1 was a v10. All had automatics and all towed a trailer 5 days a week all over the state. He drove his trucks hard in my opinion. He never had any transmission trouble.
