Up to circa 1950 water pumps used brass bushings and lubing was a neccessity.(zerk located at "bushing")
Next era used ball bearings and the zerk was used to lube the Lip seal, probaby leather.(zerk is located closer to impeller)
Newest design pumps use a carbon seal and sealed bearings in a "cartridge" with a shaft. The whole assymbly is replaced simply at rebuilding. This model usually has a weep hole so you can tell if the pump is leaking.
