Undoubtedly, the bean counters tried to kill the car because it didn't make financial sense. The engineers and the PR department managed to keep it alive.
Chrysler is doing very well now financially (although it is still debt-laden) which probably allowed some room to keep the Hellcat project alive.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (actually headquartered in the Netherlands) owns Ferrari. It plans to spin Ferrari off as a separate company.
