Same thing happened on my Farmall Cub. It is a non-synchro transmission as well. What happened was two gears got put into place (reverse and first I think) and it locks up the transmission. I asked a friend (I thought something was broken in the transmission) who told me to just play with the gears by sliding them on the rails and see if I could get it to unload. It worked.
FYI, I have an original D4 manual from WWII which belonged to an AlCan Highway Bulldozer operator. He was in one of the African American Engineer units which worked on the road. A real 1944 military D4 was put up for auction at a local equipment sale. Reserve was $4800 so I wasn't a player. It looked real nice with the LeTourneau Blades and winch hoist equipment.
