Last year I bumped the declared licensed class of my PERSONAL, not commercial 3/4 ton TRUCK from 12m regular (12,000 GCVW) to 16m (16,000 GCVW). It is more expensive but keeps me legal on the 3-5 occasions a year where I may exceed the 12k while trailering.
A couple of months ago I received a letter from the state saying that I needed to get a DOT number and go through the whole process...I ignored it because it states that I only need it if I am engaged in commercial enterprise. Recently an aquaintance of mine got smacked with a hefty ticket while hauling a bunch of scrap to the yard...within his tagged limit but does not have a DOT number. The fine didnt have anything to do with the actual weight he was hauling but all of the DOT requirements that he didnt have like fire extinguisher, log books, etc...
I am still under the impression that I am exempt under the Hobby transporter regulations but what if I am not hauling my truck? What if I am hauling scrap to the junkyard (it's trash but if I get paid for it does it make me a commercial operator?) or a rented piece of equipment that I am using like a bobcat or mini ex?
Way Im seeing it is that anything over 10000 lbs is supposed to require it now...but according to the law itself, I see that I would be exempt.
Anyone else getting letters?
