One of the jobs of the riding mechanic on the early race cars was to work the hand pump for fuel.
Manufacturers really didn't give much thought about safety until the late 50's or so. The death toll per mile driven in the early days of motoring was about 20 times higher than it is today.
About 300 people a day die because of highway accidents in India.
