I realized California was a Very Different Place 20 years ago when I walked into some small-town hardware store and saw a sign in front of the ammo that said, "Warning: This product contains LEAD, a substance known to the State of California to cause CANCER and REPRODUCTIVE DAMAGE." Some of the north coast is nice, and I also like Saline Valley (before the Park Service took over) and some of the area around Medicine Lake, but I feel very sorry for anyone who has to live in that state. Everything is just plain goofy there.

But the weird thing is all my life California always looked like it was on the verge of collapse, and yet it never actually collapses.
