This is what I was thinking last night as I lay in bed. Going back to why it is dieing when I just barely cover the plug hole it seems like it could only be because the back pressure is just too much during the compression. Intake stroke should just be sucking air. Exhaust feels strong at the manifold so that is probably ruled out, power stroke shouldn't be doing anything but sucking air, so it must be compression.
When it idles on 5 it is slow but confident. As you say, maybe the extra cylinder leans it out just enough to make it not go.
I spun the idle screw on the carb this morning and it did start with all 6, but the rpm's didn't sound much higher. I'm wondering if that is clogged, or maybe a vacuum leak?
Thanks,
don
