I doubt that the distributor is 180 off, but from the beginning, I thought it might be the wrong firing order. Easy enough for even an old pro to mix up the plug wires, especially when they go through a loom.
If a couple of the cylinders are not making power and you put the plug back in one of them, the added drag of the dead cylinder might kill the engine. But, I wouldn't know why this would happen if it's been tried with a plug out of every cylinder.
I would be tempted to run the engine with five cylinders and pull the plug wire sequentially from each remaining cylinder to verify that there is a drop in engine speed.
