Wiring harness

Considering going the DIY way for the wiring harness for my '55. There's no wire to speak of in the truck currently to use as a pattern. I would just pull individual wires and then bundle. Someone installed a modern fuse panel in the engine bay on the firewall. Is that the stock location? Any reason to move it inside the cab? My truck will never be a show truck so in this case I'm not too concerned about originality.

Does anyone have a source for good quality wire? And approximately how much I would need?
