Be sure that you are attaching the _ wire to a clean spot (no rust)
Be sure (using a meter) that you have continuity through the whole lamp unit.
if the wires were too small, you would have released the magic smoke.
Is there a data plate on the unit that tells us the expected amperage draw? Does the power supply have a circuit breaker, or an internal feature that shuts it down if you try to draw too much current?
Can you take the unit out to a truck, and carefully touch a pair of wires to it, from the truck's battery?
