Should not take a lot of cranking to get fuel into the pump and up to the carb, if all is in good shape. Trucks run out of gas all the time, and there's no great trick to getting them started. If I have any trouble with a truck that's sat for a long time, I'll pop the air cleaner and pour a shot of gas down the carb to prime it. If the fuel pump and carb are okay, that will get the engine running long enough for the fuel pump to take over. Of course if you have an electric fuel pump, you just turn it on and it will fill the carb bowl before you even try to start the engine.
If you're asking because you've tried to start the engine, and after much cranking there's still no gas in the carb, then something else is wrong in the fuel system
