I have no concerns about the strength of the 1/2-ton frame in the Ramcharger. It is a short wheelbase, and won't be carrying much load. I suppose a stiffer frame might put less stress on the topless body? The Ramcharger has a double floor to strengthen the body sans top. That's why it important to find a rust-free pop top. The 5.9 is a powerhouse, but not that much more than the big V-8s in some Ramchargers.
I need softer springs under my orange truck. The springs are so stiff, they don't flex much.
There is a Lil' Red Express diesel clone in my neighborhood that was built by shortening a 3/4-ton frame. I suppose it all depends on the condition of your donor parts?
The early 3/4-tons have the same depth (or height, if you will) as a Cummins truck, but the front crossmember is not as beefy as under a stock Cummins truck. I haven't found that difference to matter. At least, we haven't broken anything, yet.
On the other hand, I wonder about the the W350 frame under my crew cab. I've had no issues, but it spans an awful long wheelbase.
