First, you should measure the diameter of the pistons in the wheel calipers. Lets say the are 1.5 inches with a 1/8 inch stroke.. For simplicity, call that .125 x 1.5 equals .1875 times 4 wheels equals .750 units.

Do the same with the maser cylinder piston. Lets say 1.25 times 1 inch stroke equals 1.25 units.

My crude example says that the mc is large enough to run a 1 piston caliper, but not a 2 piston caliper.

It sounds like you are choosing the mc based on how it mounts, but you need to make sure it has enough volume. A poor portioning valve is really only a relief valve. It sends fluid to the front brakes normally, but if you really stomp on the pedal, the spring poppet valve sends the excess pressure to the rear brakes. They can be internal or external to the mc.
