Try a little heat and some wax. Heat the knob around the opening in the top, just enough to melt the wax and let it flow into the opening and the threads.
You should be able to get the fork out without removing the whole assembly by pulling the brake pad and the pin that holds the fork and allows it to pivot.
If you have to take the whole assembly out, you will probably break the two 1/4" bolts that hold the bracket to the gear housing. You will then have a major problem.
