were kept warm by a connection to the boiler in the fire house. I'm sure this varied from station to station and was most likely used in cold parts of the country.

The boiler was kept ready to light. One story has it that the neighborhood kids were given a reward if they could light the fire before the fireman could.

The old steam pumpers could be making steam within minutes of the alarm bell ringing. One famous paining is of galloping horses pulling a steamer through a city street with smoke and sparks already pouring from the steamer into the nighttime sky.
