Pretty sure the stock ammeter on a Dodge would melt if you hooked it up to pass the current through to the starter, not really what it was designed for. I meant putting a clamp on meter "passive" on the wire to the starter "one pole of the DC circuit". There are meters that can measure DC amps up past 600 amps, but I have never needed anything higher. Good to use it when trouble shooting. Think I got mine about ten years ago and spent about $285 at the time, but they have come down in price. Also good with AC when checking loads for switches.
Looking in Grainger, they didn't have my model. Mine has a selector for AC or DC amps where these don't. Don't know if the digital age has made this change possible or if it is all the same anyway.
