Voltage = Current(I) x Resistance

A 6 volt system has to push more current at than a 12 volt system at the same resistance. Or another way is that 6-volt systems are far more sensitive to resistance than a 12-volt system. They will work fine, but you need to make sure that both the supply and the ground lines are good and clean.

Look for voltage drops across the lines; i.e. measure the voltage at each end of the starter wire, should be zero or close, if not there's a voltage drop across the cable somewhere, usually a connection, might also try it while trying to pull a load across that line.

And don't forget to check the ground wires too, have to have a path back too! It's a cheap and easy first step before you go spending money on parts.
