There is no doubt a guy can get the job done by flat towing. I have done it myself, for a very short trip (about 4 miles), when I didn't have a trailer. But in the long run, it's safer, faster, less stressful, and more convenient to use a proper size vehicle with a brake controller to operate the brakes on the trailer.
The heavier tow vehicle lesson is one I learned hard, when a tire on the trailer blew out and the trailer jack knifed while I was trying to stop it. The too light vehicle I was towing with rolled and was totaled. I also had no brake controller in the towing vehicle. Good thing is, it made me move up to a Dodge 2500 CTD. :)
