My brother and I had a great time at the Rally, good to see old friends...both human and mechanical.
We drove my M-37 about 1200 miles to and from the show. It got about 9 mpg at 40-45 which is a little lower than I am used to getting with my flatfenders. Power seemed at bit low also but this is hard to judge
The spark timing was set at 5 degrees BTDC and the book calls for -2 to +2 but as they point out, that enables use with very low octane gas.
Has anyone tested M-37s to see how initial spark timing affects gas milage?
I used to drag race a 1950 Plymouth (don't laugh...I routinely beat the Falcons and Corvairs in my class...for a car that cost $35, that ain't bad) and tried many different engine settings. The best times were obtained with the spark set at about +5 degrees. So this seemed a sensible place to start on the M-37 except that it is possible that the advance curves are different enough that this is not the optimum initial setting.
Anyone have thoughts on this??
