oil pressure

On original oil pump on '80 225, where the filter threads on there is a stand-up tube about 2 inches that goes into the filter. At the bottom of this tube there is a light spring/valve assembly.If this is missing, is it possible for no oil to get to the top of the motor? I can't come up with anything else!
