Ignition Switch (?)

On both my 49 & 50 B1PW's I've noticed that they'll start with the key turned either to the left or right. Is this common? Normally turning the key to the left will energize an ACC circuit, but since these old gals were produced before doo-dads were introduced it makes you wonder. Any ideas?
