Why should I need a new pinion bearing at 81000 miles?

My 3500 series Dodge van 1996 with a dana 60. I hear it rumbling. the shop I go to confirmed it. as soon as it was paid for it is costing me a truck payment a month anyway. I need a new box truck with a diesel, any suggestions? I wish Dodge made one.
