I have generally been following the instructions for start up/shut down, which is to run it loaded for a bit (blowing air out the service valve) to warm it up, and for shutdown to close the service valve and let it run a few minutes before turning it off. You are correct that the unloader seems to be working OK, as I can hear it cycling. I shut it down quickly when I saw it shooting coolant out the overflow.
