The ridge at the top shows cylinder wear. If the step is bigger than a fingernail's thickness, don't tie up any more dough in the engine.

If the ridge is minimal, dropping the pan to push a piston or two out the top will give a good appraisal. And plastigauge the rod and main bearings too.
