I don't remember how the shaft was held in. It may just be that the plate keeps it from coming out. Somebody will be along to tell you exactly. Also, the manual probably has a section about heat risers.

In any event, you should fix the heat riser valve so it works properly. Both VPW and Midwest Military have kits. As you have learned, it's not that easy to get the manifold off, so you want to do it right the first time.

Pay attention to which washers go where. The same Dodge/Plymouth site has a good article on removing and replacing the manifold.
